Forensics/Fraud Investigation

Meara Welch Browne employs Certified Public Accountants (CPA's), Certified Fraud Examiners, Certified Information Systems Auditors, Certified Information Technology Professionals, and CPA's certified in financial forensics and the latest digital forensic software.  Our team provides analysis in accounting, information technology and digital forensics that rises to the level of evidentiary requirements in criminal and civil litigations.

The world of digital forensics has changed significantly over the last several years with the exponential growth of data storage, the various storage mediums available and now storage in the Cloud.  It is no longer practical to image everything given not just the amount of time necessary but also the potential legal challenges surrounding mobile devices and Cloud storage.  We now must, and do, employ a strategic, targeted approach in which key system artifacts are analyzed quickly allowing us to focus our efforts on devices flagged as having high potential forensic value.

Fraud Investigation
Organizations suffer tremendous costs as a result of occupational fraud and abuse. Occupational fraud and abuse is a widespread problem that affects practically every organization, regardless of size, location, or industry. Small businesses suffer disproportionately large losses due to occupational fraud and abuse. According to the 2014 Report to the Nations – On Occupational Fraud, the median loss caused by fraud was $145,000. The loss caused by occupational fraud is directly related to the position of the perpetrator. Frauds committed by owners and executives caused a median loss of over $500,000, which was 4 times higher than the losses caused by managers and almost 7 times higher than the losses caused by employees. The most cost-effective way to deal with fraud is to prevent it. According to the CFE study, once an organization has been defrauded it is unlikely to recover its losses. At the time of the survey, 58% of the victim organizations in the study had not recovered any of their losses while only 14% had recovered all losses.
